Looking for a powerful Photoshop alternative that doesn't lock you into a subscription? I just came across PhotoCraft, an open-source image editor from ArtCraft that looks pretty interesting!

🔥 What is PhotoCraft?

PhotoCraft is a native image editor written entirely in Rust. It's designed to provide a familiar professional image-editing experience while remaining free, open source, and capable of working offline.

It includes features such as:

  • 🗂️ Layers and masks
  • 🎨 Adjustment layers
  • ✨ Layer styles
  • 🔤 Type/text tools
  • 🖌️ Brushes
  • 📐 Vector tools
  • 🎯 Non-destructive editing
  • 🎨 Advanced color management
  • 📁 PSD & PSB support
  • ⚡ GPU-accelerated rendering
  • 🔒 On-device selection tools
One of the really interesting parts is the PSD support. PhotoCraft says it can open, edit, and save layered PSD and PSB files, with 134 of 135 real-world test files successfully round-tripping byte-for-byte.

💻 Works on More Than Just Windows

PhotoCraft is available for:

Windows • macOS • Linux • Web

There are even ARM64 versions available for Windows and Linux, along with a WebAssembly version that can be self-hosted.

🆓 And It's Open Source

This is probably the part that caught my attention the most.

PhotoCraft is free and open source, with the source code available on GitHub. It's built in Rust rather than being an Electron/web-wrapper application.

That makes it especially interesting for people who like having software that they can actually own, inspect, modify, and run locally.

🤔 Could This Replace Photoshop?

It's still an early-stage project, so I wouldn't necessarily throw away Photoshop or GIMP just yet. But the feature set is already pretty impressive, and the fact that it's open source makes it one to keep an eye on.

If you're a photographer, graphic designer, website developer, content creator, or just someone who likes experimenting with new software, PhotoCraft could be worth trying.

👉 Have you tried PhotoCraft yet?

I'd love to hear what everyone thinks. Is this something you'd actually use instead of Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, or another editor?
